Economic- A long term economic cause leading up to the war was the increase of job competition for immigrants. With more and more slaves coming to America it left the immigrants looking for jobs with pay. The North and South also had very different types of economy's causing many different issues and making it very difficult to find a common ground. With the North being much more industrialized verses the South relying on agriculture and slavery work as a way to run their economy this was a big part of the split of North and South.
Social/Moral- The North and South were also separated on their social/moral beliefs on the use of slavery. The Souuth found it acceptable because they argued that the sudden end to the slave economy would have a killing impact on the economics in the South where reliance on slave labor was the foundation of their economy. Opposed to the North who believed the slavery was unacceptable and where slaves were free. In 1852 when author Harriet Beecher Stowe published her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin a book that gave a dark inside look and truth of what slavery was really like which lead to anger from the South and motivation for the North.
Political- To act on fugitive slaves running away from their plantations to be free in the North the Fugitive Slave Acts enanacted by congress in 1793 were a pair of federal laws that allowed for the capture and return of runaway slaves within the territory of the United States. Due to resistance of the 1793 law it later led to the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 which included harsher punishments for runaways. To counter act the Liberty Laws were passed by serveral states in the North in 1793 and 1850.
Triggers- One of the main triggers of the Civil War was Abraham Licoln being elected president which angerd the South. After a Union victory at Antietam Licoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation freeing all slaves behind Confederate lines.
